The Financial Information Service (FIS) has been helping Australians make informed decisions about their financial future for 35 years.
When the program launched in 1989, there were just a handful of dedicated staff providing financial information to older Australians.
As demand grew, so did the program. By 1991 it had expanded to help people from all walks of life. Today, there are more than 130 FIS Officers across the country.
The service has continued to evolve to meet the needs of the community.
Linda, who’s been a FIS Officer since 1996, has seen a lot of changes and improvements over the years.
‘When I started, the groups we worked with were quite different. Now we engage with a much wider range of people, including culturally and linguistically diverse groups. There’s a lot more involvement with community groups too,’ Linda said
In 2007, Linda became the first FIS Officer to deliver a seminar in a language other than English. As a former refugee, she was proud to be able to bridge gaps and support people with warmth and patience.
‘I get such a sense of job satisfaction when I help someone understand their financial options, and I enjoy guiding them through the financial maze. It’s incredibly fulfilling,’ she said.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the program adapted again.
In-person seminars moved to an online format and digital tools, leaving behind the days of carting overhead projectors and slides to local venues.
Today, the service offers a range of ways to connect with our FIS Officers. People can join a free online webinar, talk with a FIS Officer over the phone or at an in-person appointment, or find them at a local expo.
The service empowers Australians at every stage of life to make informed financial decisions for their future, covering topics such as:
- financial options for young people, parents going through separation, carers and people with disability
- managing debt and credit
- superannuation
- selling and buying homes
- retirement options, including gifting and lump sums
- borrowing from the Home Equity Access Scheme or reverse mortgages
- transitioning to aged care.
