Who can get it

You can get ABSTUDY School Term Allowance if you and your child are both eligible.

Eligible children

You can get School Term Allowance if your child is all of the following:

  • younger than 16
  • living at home
  • studying full time
  • eligible to get ABSTUDY as a dependent
  • not approved for ABSTUDY living away from home rate.

School Term Allowance is mostly for students at high school. Primary school students can be eligible if they’re either 14 or older on 1 January in the year of study.

If your child turns 16 during the year, you can get the allowance for each term before their birthday.

Eligible parents

For you to be eligible, at least one of these things must apply at any point in the school term. You need to:

  • get an income support payment, even if we pay you $0 due to employment income
  • hold a current Heath Care Card (HCC), including a HCC issued because you get the maximum rate of Family Tax Benefit
  • hold a current Low Income Health Care Card
  • get Self-Employment Allowance
  • get ABSTUDY Living Allowance for your own study or training
  • get Farm Household Allowance.

You only need to be getting one of these forms of support for one day of each term.

School Attendance

We only pay School Term Allowance if your child attends school for at least 85% of each term.
