If you are an Afghan evacuee who moved to Australia, you can apply for support depending on the type of visa you have.

What financial support you can get on a valid 449 visa

If you have a valid 449 visa and you are in Australia, you can claim any of the following payments. You will not serve a waiting period. Read more about these payments:

Afghanistan humanitarian visa 449 Medicare extension

You have ongoing eligibility for Medicare until 30 November 2024 if you hold a valid 449 visa.

You do not need to take any action. We will send your new Medicare card to the address we have for you.

You can use a digital copy of your Medicare card. You’ll need to sign into the Express Plus Medicare mobile app to use it. To use the app, you need a myGov account linked to your Medicare online account. If you don’t have these, set them up then download the app.

You can also add your Medicare card to the myGov app. Read more about the myGov app on the myGov website.

If you no longer have a 449 visa and are a permanent resident, you’ll need to let us know. You can send us documents that give proof of your identity and residence. We will then update your Medicare entitlement and send you a new Medicare card.

What health services you can use

We have services to help you with health care and getting vaccines.

Help with general health care
