SmartCard information for businesses

The SmartCard gives enhanced Income Management customers a way to spend their money online, and in approved stores and businesses.

There are some things SmartCard holders cannot buy with their SmartCard. They can’t:

  • buy tobacco or tobacco products
  • buy pornography
  • buy alcohol or homebrew kits
  • gamble
  • buy cash-like products and some gift cards
  • get cash out.

Customers will know these goods as excluded goods but your business and POS system may refer to them as restricted items.

Where a customer has a SmartCard, it means they should not be purchasing any restricted items.

To help support your staff to ensure customers cannot buy restricted items with a SmartCard, you can arrange Product Level Blocking (PLB). PLB automatically prevents the purchase of those goods on your point of sale (POS) system. The POS system and EFTPOS terminal work together to identify when a customer presents a SmartCard. It alerts staff if there are any of these goods before they can complete the sale.

Watch our video for more information on how Product Level Blocking can support your business.
