Comparison between cards

Both Income Management and enhanced Income Management help customers manage their money to meet essential household needs and expenses.

There are functional differences between the Income Management account and BasicsCard, and the enhanced Income Management account and SmartCard. In the table below, Yes shows options that apply to each card. No shows options that do not apply.

The SmartCard is linked to an enhanced Income Management account. It operates like a regular bank account with a BSB and account number.

However, customers:

  • can’t spend available funds on restricted items
  • can only transfer funds to other enhanced income management accounts
  • can only arrange external transfers to approved recipients.

Quarantining rates

The percentage of income managed funds is:

  • 70% for child protection or supporting people at risk referrals
  • 50% for all other measures.

The rest of their payment goes to their normal bank account.

  • 60%, 75% or 90% for Cape York and Doomadgee region customers
  • 70% for child protection or supporting people at risk referrals
  • 50% for all other areas.

Customers cannot use their BasicsCard to:

  • buy tobacco and tobacco products
  • buy pornography
  • buy alcohol or homebrew kits

Cashless Debit Card

The Cashless Debit Card program ended on 6 March 2023. Eligible customers moved to enhanced Income Management and got an enhanced Income Management account with a SmartCard.

Cashless Debit Cards remain valid until customers activate their new SmartCard. Customers may continue to use Cashless Debit Cards to purchase goods at your business.
