To reduce errors in claiming, check the Medicare number for your patient is correct.
If your customer doesn’t have their Medicare card or their details are incorrect, you can get their details in Health Professional Online Services (HPOS). You’ll need your patient’s consent.
You can use the Seemingly valid Medicare Card form (PB136) when:
- a previous PBS or RPBS claim was submitted and the prescription was rejected because their Medicare or Repatriation card details were invalid
- your patient has presented another prescription and can’t provide any alternative Medicare or Repatriation card details
- you’re satisfied the original details the patient provided are correct
- you have no reason to believe the patient identified on the prescription isn’t entitled to get pharmaceutical benefits.
In your claim, use the seemingly valid special Medicare number 2543 77833 1 1 and:
- complete the form and attach it to the prescription
- photocopy or photograph the Medicare card, use the same special number, attach the photocopy or photo to the prescription.
You’ll need to keep a copy of the form and prescription for 2 years for audit checks.
