External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program

You can get a Medicare rebate to help with the cost of an external breast prosthesis, or swimming prosthesis, after breast cancer surgery.

You can claim a reimbursement of up to $400 for a prosthesis or up to $800 if you need a prosthesis for both breasts following a double mastectomy. The reimbursement amount may cover an external prosthesis or an external swimming prosthesis.

To get this you must:

  • be enrolled in Medicare
  • have had breast surgery as a result of breast cancer
  • not have purchased and already claimed under this program in the past 2 years.

You’ll be reimbursed if you’ve had breast surgery due to breast cancer. This includes:

  • double mastectomies
  • prophylactic mastectomies - preventative surgery
  • partial mastectomies
  • lumpectomies.

You can read more about who can get the Medicare rebate.
