Once you’ve set up your access to the Healthcare Identifiers (HI) Service and My Health Record, you can find identifiers for:
- patients
- individual health care providers
- health care provider organisations.
You’ll also be able to access My Health Record for your patients. This depends on what identifiers you’re accessing and how you’re accessing them.
You can search for individual health care providers and organisations in the Healthcare Provider Directory (HPD). You can use the HPD to:
- get health care identifiers to create links for setting up access
- get contact details to make referrals or send secure messages
- see individual health care providers who work at organisations.
You can access this service in Health Professional Online Services (HPOS) with a Provider Digital Access (PRODA) account. If you don’t have one, register for a PRODA account. Then follow the steps to set up your HPOS access.
As a health care provider organisation, you can get your patient’s Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) using an organisation patient administration system or practice management software. Contact your software vendor about how to use their products and what you need to do.
If your software isn’t working, individual health care providers and authorised employees can call the HI Service. We need to verify your identity before giving you a patient’s IHI over the phone.
Once you have your patient’s IHI, you can include it in:
- your patient records
- your referrals
- your diagnostic requests
- other health care information relating to the patient.
You can also use your patient’s IHI to access their My Health Record, if they have one.
