Student Start-up Loan (SSL) applications are open now

Published: 27 January 2025

You can take out a SSL up to twice a year if you’re getting an eligible student payment.

SSLs are a voluntary, tax free loan that can help with your study supplies, travel expenses and living payments.

You can borrow $1321 up to twice a year if you’re getting Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY Living Allowance.

You’ll need to pay back the amount you borrow plus indexation. Over time this can add up to a lot of money.

You should think about how this will impact you in the long term before you get one.

You can apply for the January to June loan period now.
