Health professional eligibility
Health professionals who can create an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP) include:
- general practitioners (GP) or medical practitioners working in general practice
- consultant physicians in psychiatry
- consultant physicians in paediatrics.
Patient eligibility
There are rules about patient eligibility for an EDP. Read about eligibility for an eating disorder health care plan.
MBS billing and claiming requirements
Health professionals may be able to claim for services for an EDP. These include face-to-face, telehealth video and phone services.
Services available include:
- prepare an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan
- review an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan
- attendance items to provide eating disorder psychological treatment services.
What you can claim depends on the health professional’s and patient’s eligibility. Some EDP items can’t be claimed with some other consultation items on the same day for the same patient.
You can read more about billing an Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plans.
You can use the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items online checker in HPOS to confirm patient and claim eligibility. Read the relevant MBS item descriptions, fact sheets and explanatory notes on the MBS Online website.
Referrals to allied health professionals
You may decide that your patient would benefit from referral to allied health professionals.
Within each referral, you can refer your patient for up to:
- 10 psychological treatment services
- 20 dietetics services.
Service maximums over a 12 month period include both of the following:
- 40 psychological treatment services
- 20 dietetics services.
The 12 month period starts from the date of the EDP.
Patients are eligible for other allied health support if their medical practitioner has completed either:
- Team Care Arrangements (TCAs)
- Mental Health Case Conferences (MHCCs).
