Notional assessment

We assess what the child support rate would be if the agreement wasn’t in place. We call this a notional assessment.

What we’ll do

We make the notional assessment after we accept a child support agreement.

We’ll contact both parents to check their circumstances. Parents have 14 days to call the Child support enquiry line and ask for changes to the assessment. For example, if they want to change care details or give an income estimate.

The notional assessment will be finalised after either:

  • 14 days
  • we finalise all change requests.

You can object to the details of the assessment.

Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A

We use the notional assessment to calculate the amount of FTB Part A you can receive.

Updating the assessment

We’ll update it either:

  • every 3 years
  • if the agreed child support rate changes by more than 15%
  • if you have a limited child support agreement and either parent asks for a new assessment.
