New medical certificate rules for job seekers

Published: 1 January 2025

From 1 January 2025, your medical certificate can be up to 24 months, based on your medical condition.

Your doctor will assess your condition and complete a medical certificate.

When you give us the medical certificate we’ll work out if we can give an exemption and let you know.

These rules apply to people getting one of the following payments:

  • JobSeeker Payment
  • Youth Allowance for job seekers
  • Parenting Payment Single when the youngest child turns 6
  • Special Benefit for Nominated Visa Holders.

If you’re sick or injured and can’t meet your mutual obligations, visit your doctor to get a medical certificate.
