You’re caring for or have custody of another person’s child

You may be independent if you care for or have custody of another person’s dependent child.

You may need to give us proof that you meet these requirements. This may include 1 or more of the following:

  • documents showing financial care of the child
  • enrolment paperwork for a play group, kindergarten or school
  • a statement from a professional who has regular contact with the child such as a teacher, police, minister, accountant, lawyer or doctor
  • any other document that you can provide to support your claim that you have care or custody of the child.

If we assess you as caring for another person’s child, we’ll treat you as independent but this is reviewable. If you stop caring for the child we may consider you dependent again.
