How much you can get

The amount of assistance with ABSTUDY master and doctorate compulsory course fees we pay depends on how much your fees are.

If you’re eligible, we’ll pay the compulsory course fees. We’ll cover the full costs of the fees.

If you’ve received a scholarship to help with your fees we’ll take off that amount.

If you’re doing 2 masters or doctorates at once, you may be eligible for tuition fee assistance for both courses.

Things we don’t pay

We won’t pay any fees the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may charge you if either:

  • you lodge your application late
  • you incorrectly select to defer your payment.

You need to pay any fees charged by the ATO.

Ways we pay

We usually pay compulsory course fees directly to the education provider. Then, the education provider sends the fees to the ATO after the census date. If the compulsory course fees are sent to the ATO, we’ll only pay the compulsory course fees. We won’t pay any other charges or increases that the ATO may add.

We can reimburse you, if you pay your tuition fees upfront.
