DVA provide a range of financial support. If you get a DVA payment, it may affect the amount of payment you can get from us. Find out more about the financial support DVA offer on their website.
To help make sure we pay you the right amount, we get some payment information from DVA.
You must still let us know about any payments you, or your partner, get from DVA to make sure we pay you the right amount.
If you get an income support payment from us
You’re not eligible to get an income support payment from us, if you get any of the following from DVA:
- Age Pension from DVA
- Income Support Supplement
- Service Pension
- Veteran Payment
- War Widow(er)’s Pension
- Wholly Dependent Partner Payment.
Wholly Dependent Partner Payment can be paid as a regular fortnightly payment or as a lump sum. If you’ve accessed the payment as a lump sum, you’re still not eligible for any income support payment from us for your lifetime.
If your partner gets any payments from DVA, you must tell us. We may assess it as income and it’ll affect the amount you can get from us.
If you are a carer, you may be eligible to receive a Carer Allowance from us. The receipt of DVA payments does not exclude eligibility to this payment.
If you get a student payment from DVA
You’re not eligible to get a job seeker or student payment from us, if you get either of the following from DVA:
- Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme (MRCAETS)
- Veterans’ Children Education Scheme (VCES).
If you get any other payments from us and you get one of these payments from DVA, you must tell us. We may assess it as income and it’ll affect the amount you can get from us.
If you get a family payment from us
You must tell us about any payments you get from DVA so we can update your family income estimate. This includes any lump sum payments you get from DVA.
You may get the maximum rate of Family Tax Benefit Part A if you or your partner get an income support payment from DVA.
You’ll get it as long as your DVA income support payment doesn’t reduce to zero due to employment income.
If you have dependent children, you'll usually get Rent Assistance with Family Tax Benefit Part A and not with your DVA payment.
If you get a DVA compensation payment
If you get a DVA compensation payment for economic loss due the inability to work, we assess the payment as compensation. If you, or your partner, also get a payment from us, the compensation can affect your payment.
We call your DVA payment a compensation payment if you get either of these:
- Incapacity Payment under Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (MRCA)
- Incapacity Payment under Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation (Defence-related Claims) Act 1988 (DRCA).
Check what you need to know for how it can affect your payments.
DVA also pay compensatory-like payments, that aren’t for economic loss due the inability to work. Examples of these DVA payments are all of the following:
- Disability Compensation Payment at either the general or special rate
- Permanent Impairment payments
- Special Rate Disability Pension (SRDP)
- War Widow(er)s Pension
- Wholly Dependent Partner payments.
These payments are not assessed as compensation.
If you get War Widow(er)s Pension or Wholly Dependent Partner payment, and you or your partner get a payment from us, you must tell us. This is so we can update your income details and make sure we pay you the right amount.
