Get a patient’s healthcare identifier

Get a patient’s Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) in the Healthcare Identifiers (HI) Service.

You can get a patient’s Individual Healthcare Identifier (IHI) as one of the following:

  • health care provider organisation (HPO)
  • supporting organisation.

You can get a patient’s IHI using an organisation patient administration system or practice management software. Contact your software vendor about how to use their products and what you need to do.

If your software isn’t working, individual health care providers and authorised employees can call the HI Service. We need to verify your identity before giving you a patient’s IHI over the phone.

Once you have your patient’s IHI you can include it in:

  • your patient records
  • your referrals
  • your diagnostic requests
  • other health care information relating to the patient.

You can also use your patient’s IHI to access their My Health Record if they have one.
