Documents you need to provide

There are important documents you need to give us to provide an Assurance of Support.

We’ll need a copy of the visa applicant’s assuree letter from the Department of Home Affairs. The letter will say the visa applicant must have an Assurance of Support.

Important tax documents to prove your income

You can apply as an individual or on behalf of an organisation.

As an individual assurer, you must either have a notice of assessment or be able to provide evidence that you had less income due to a temporary change in your situation. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issues a notice of assessment when they assess your income after you lodge a tax return.

For organisations, we require the company tax return. Your organisation may be able to obtain the company tax returns from your accountant.

Individuals applying

If you’ll be the only assurer, or you’re giving a joint assurance, you can apply online using your Centrelink online account through myGov.

Documents individuals need

If you’re applying as an individual, you’ll need to give us the following:

  • proof of your identity
  • your Customer Reference Number (CRN), if you have one
  • proof of your Australian residence status
  • your notice of assessment for the previous financial year from the ATO
  • proof of why your income was temporarily reduced
  • proof you have a job or ongoing income.

To prove your Australian residence status you can give us a copy of either your permanent residence or Australian citizenship.

If you don’t have the previous financial year’s notice of assessment, we can accept your notice of assessment for the year before that. But, you’ll also need to give us proof of your income for the current financial year.

For individuals, we can’t accept a tax return as proof of income.

If you’re self-employed, you must give us a profit and loss statement for the current financial year. If you can’t, you can give us a letter from your accountant with details of your current gross income. You must also give us a notice of assessment for the previous financial year from the ATO. Read about your notice of assessment on the ATO website.

To prove you have a job or ongoing income you can give us either:

  • 2 recent consecutive payslips for the current financial year, or
  • a letter from your employer with details of your current gross income.
