Check if your child is exempt from Family Tax Benefit (FTB) study requirements

Published: 28 January 2025

To get FTB payments for your child after they turn 16, they need to be in full time study or have an approved exemption to study.

If your child can’t study full time after they turn 16, they may be eligible for a study exemption from us. This means you may continue getting FTB payments for them.

The exemption can be permanent or temporary. Temporary exemptions can last up to 12 months.

Read more about what full time secondary study for FTB is, including how to check if your child is exempt.
