Bringing home a child born overseas

If you’ve had or adopted a child overseas, there are some things you should do when you get back to Australia.

Enrol your child in Medicare

If your child was born overseas, you may be able to enrol them in Medicare if you’re an Australian citizen or permanent resident.

If you have adopted a child from overseas, you may be able to enrol them in Medicare. If the adoption isn’t yet final, we can give the child their own Medicare card.

Check what support you can get

We have a range of support for parents, including if you’re adopting a child. Read more about our how we can help if you’re raising kids.
