Apply for additional provider numbers

You can apply for an additional provider number online or by completing a form.

You need to apply for an additional provider number if you work:

  • in a new practice location
  • for a new service at the same location
  • in a new health profession or discipline.

You can apply online for an additional Medicare provider number if you’re any of the following:

  • Ahpra-registered allied health professional with limited or general registration
  • Non-medical health professional - nurse practitioner, midwife, dentist, dental practitioner or optometrist
  • Medical intern who trained in Australia or New Zealand
  • Non-Ahpra registered allied health professional
  • Medical practitioner.

You can also apply online for an additional provider number in the same location if you’re a Medicare Urgent Care Clinic (UCC) providing UCC services.

If you’re eligible, you can apply for an additional provider number online through Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).

When you get your additional provider number wait 2 business days before you submit claims with the new number.

To apply for an additional provider number:

  1. Log in to Provider Digital Access (PRODA) to use HPOS.
  2. Select My details, then My provider numbers.
  3. Select Create a new provider location and read the privacy note.
  4. Submit answers to required questions.

Your bank details for the new location will be pending if someone you’ve nominated as a delegate creates a new location on your behalf.

You can manage your provider numbers, banking details, practice details and locations in HPOS.
