Special rules if you get Disability Support Pension

To get Rent Assistance with DSP when you are younger than 21 years old, you must meet some special rules.

When you are younger than 18 years old

When you are younger than 18 years old, one of the following must apply:

  • you’re independent
  • you’re a member of a couple
  • you’re living in disability accommodation
  • you’re living away from your parents’ home due to a medical condition.

If you qualify for Rent Assistance as an independent when you are younger than 18, your Rent Assistance will stop when you turn 18.

When you are 18, 19 and 20 years old

When you are 18, 19 and 20 years old, one of the following must apply:

  • you’re a member of a couple
  • you’re living away from your parents or guardians on a permanent basis
  • you’re living in disability accommodation.

When you turn 21 years old, there are no special rules to get Rent Assistance. Read more about who can get it.
