If they are adopted

You can add your child to your Medicare card when the adoption is final.

Enrol a child adopted from overseas

You can enrol your child in Medicare and add them to your Medicare card if:

  • they hold a permanent resident visa
  • you have a letter proving the adoption is final.

If the adoption isn’t yet final, you can still enrol them if either:

  • they hold a permanent resident visa
  • you’ve applied for permanent residency for them.

In this instance, they’ll get their own Medicare card.

To enrol your child, you’ll need to complete a Medicare enrolment form. You’ll also need to give us all of these documents:

  • your child’s passport or Immicard
  • your child’s permanent resident visa or their temporary visa and proof you’ve applied for their permanent resident visa
  • proof you’ve adopted or are adopting the child
  • your Medicare card.

You don’t need to get your supporting documents certified.

Enrol a child adopted from Australia

You can enrol them in Medicare and add them to your Medicare card.

You’ll need to give us both:

  • their birth certificate
  • a letter proving the adoption is final.

If the adoption isn’t yet final, we can give the child their own Medicare card.

You don’t need to get your supporting documents certified.
