About MyMedicare

MyMedicare is a voluntary patient registration model. It aims to strengthen the relationship between patients, their general practice, general practitioner (GP) and primary care teams.

Key dates:

  • 1 July 2023 - health professionals can get ready for MyMedicare by asking their practice to link them in the Organisation Register in Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).
  • 1 October 2023 - health professionals can start patient registrations in HPOS under My programs by selecting the MyMedicare tile.
  • November 2023 - new Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items will be available for patients who are registered in MyMedicare.

Eligibility for general practices

To be eligible for MyMedicare, general practices must:

An accreditation exemption is available until 30 June 2025. This is available to non-accredited practices, including sole providers, who deliver general practice services to:

  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS)
  • Aboriginal Medical Services (AMS).

This also includes mobile and outreach models:

  • in rural settings
  • in residential aged care
  • in disability residential settings
  • for First Nations Australians
  • for people experiencing homelessness.

Eligibility for health care providers

To be eligible for MyMedicare, providers must:

  • work at a MyMedicare eligible practice
  • be linked to the practice on the Organisation Register
  • have a valid provider number and be eligible to deliver Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) or Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) equivalent services.

The provider must be an eligible GP or nurse practitioner.

Eligible GPs include:

  • registered GPs
  • prescribed medical practitioners
  • GP registrars.

Eligibility for patients

Patients can register for MyMedicare.

Patients must have a Medicare or DVA Veteran card to register in MyMedicare. There will be options for patients to register online and or in-person at their registered practice.
