Annual and lifetime caps

There are annual and lifetime caps for your aged care costs. They apply if you started care after 1 July 2014.

Annual and lifetime caps follow you when you change aged care providers, or move between a Home Care Package and an aged care home.

We’ll write to you and your aged care provider once you’ve reached the annual or lifetime caps.

When you reach the annual cap

When you reach the annual cap, you’ll stop paying part of your aged care costs. You’ll stop paying this cost until the anniversary of the date your aged care services started.

When you reach the lifetime cap

When you reach the lifetime cap, you’ll stop paying part of your aged care costs. You’ll never pay this cost again.

When the cap amounts change

The cap amounts change on 20 March and 20 September each year in line with the consumer price index.

You can find out about annual and lifetime caps for Home Care Packages and aged care homes on the My Aged Care website.
