Your Family Tax Benefit (FTB) will change when your child finishes year 12

Published: 13 November 2024

If your child finishes year 12 or an equivalent qualification in November or December, your Family Tax Benefit for them will stop on 31 December.

You may not need to update your child’s study end date to reflect the actual date they complete their studies. This is if both of the following apply:

  • we have their study end date recorded as November or December
  • they complete year 12 or equivalent on or after 1 November.

If these don’t apply, you’ll need to update their study end date. It should reflect the actual date they complete their studies.

This is so you don’t end up with a debt.

Your child may still be eligible for their own payment if they’re doing further study or training. They don’t need to move out of home to get payments.
